Sedation dentistry involves using medication to help you feel more relaxed and calm during your visit so that you can receive the treatments you need without difficulty. There are several types of sedation available depending on your individual needs and the level of sedation you require to receive treatment. These types of sedation include:
Nitrous Oxide (“Laughing Gas”)
This is a mild sedative that is provided via inhalation. When you inhale nitrous oxide, you should begin to feel more relaxed almost immediately, and the effects wear off as soon as you stop inhaling the gas, allowing you to safely drive yourself home.
This form of sedation involves taking an oral medication, usually a pill or a liquid, prior to your appointment. By the time you come into our office, you should feel calm and at ease. You will need to have someone available to drive you home after your visit is over.
This type of sedation is administered intravenously (through the veins). This allows our dentist to provide your sedation more quickly and control the level of sedation you receive. While IV sedation, like nitrous oxide and oral sedation, is a form a conscious sedation, you may feel as if you slept through the treatment. You will need to have someone available to drive you home following your treatment.
